Lance Storm vs. Jerry Lynn (9/4/99)

If you’ve seen or heard of ECW, this match is probably the antithesis of the ECW style. It goes a full nine minutes, and there’s not a slam, suplex, or Holy Shit moment, just solid technical wrestling punctuated by a few brief forays out of the ring. Fact of the matter is that Lance Storm and Jerry Lynn are two wrestlers capable of putting together an interesting match without bumps, and they do so effortlessly. It’s hard to tell if the Florida crowd appreciates the work of these two men or if they’re disappointed by the lack of cool moves on the part of Lynn (who was routinely pushing Rob Van Dam to the brink and had started calling himself The New F’n Show), but they were certainly witness to what was maybe the most unique match in ECW history. Lance Storm, an incredible professional wrestler by anybody’s standards, doesn’t seem to care, as he celebrates the accomplishment by looking into the handheld camera pointed at him and says “No bumps” like it’s no big deal.

As far as the video of this match goes, ECW actually had an agreement with a company that allowed them to shoot footage of house shows, the stuff that wouldn’t get on TV. ECW’s TV production was already low-key, but the Fan Cam shows took it a step further, as the guys filming shows weren’t even accorded professional-grade cameras, and Joey Styles, the voice of ECW, didn’t call the matches. The footage exists in a weird sort of negative zone–WWE owns the ECW tape library, but ECW didn’t own these shows. That means that a significant chunk of poorly shot ECW history is being sold without a dime of it going to the pockets of Vince McMahon. Of course, a lot of it’s kind of lame, but it’s disappointing that a hypothetical Best of ECW Volume 3 DVD won’t have a weird little thing like this as an easter egg.
